OBJECTIVE:
To learn about conditions on board a slave ship, and the method by which Africans were sold into slavery.

TIME:
1 class period

Students learn a great deal about the Atlantic slave trade (also known as the transatlantic slave trade) while reading a story with missing words, names, and terms. For each blank space, two possible answers are given in parentheses. Class members need to decide which word(s) in the parentheses correctly complete the sentences. Students can work individually during class time.

Next, in a section entitled "Gustavus Vassa Crosses the Atlantic," class members read a primary source that is one of the few first-hand accounts of a slave ship crossing the ocean. Once finished, students give short written answers to a series of questions using specific information from the reading.

Easy-to-follow Teacher Instructions and answer key included, along with a 20-question follow up quiz to measure student progress. The quiz can also be given as a homework assignment.
