This lesson begins by reading background information with the class about how Thomas Paine's book "Common Sense" convinced many people to favor independence from Great Britain. 

Students then read through the Declaration of Independence, which is included on the lesson pages.Class members can underline or highlight important statements and ideas of this famous historical document in preparation for a series of follow-up questions in a variety of formats. 

Easy-to-follow Teacher Instructions and answer key included, along with a 20-question follow up quiz to measure student progress. The quiz can also be given as a homework assignment.
