Class members begin this lesson reading through several summaries of the major events in the growth of democracy from early times to the present. Topics include:

  • Ancient Greece
  • Ancient Rome
  • The Middle Ages
  • Renaissance and Reformation
  • Democracy in England
  • Democracy in France
  • American Democracy
  • Spread of Democracy
  • Democracy Today

As they read through the information, have the kids underline or highlight key words, names, terms, and ideas.

When they have completed the reading section, it is time to play JEOPARDY!

A large drawing of the gameboard is put on the board with five categories: TERMS, PLACES, EVENTS, PEOPLE, ODDS AND ENDS. If you have a whiteboard, you may want to use it to project the JEOPARDY gameboard on page 5C.

The class is divided into two teams. Someone from Team 1 will be asked to pick a category and point value. For example, they might choose “EVENTS for 20.” A question will then be asked about an event in the development of democracy. The first person on either team to raise their hand will be called on. A correct answer earns the team 20 points. If an incorrect answer is given, or the person called on does not respond immediately, the other team can answer.

The person who gives the correct answer will choose the next category and point value. When a space is chosen, it will be crossed out and cannot be picked again. The same person cannot answer twice in a row for their team.
