Begin this lesson by reading with the class the introductory paragraphs about civil rights and how courts, especially the Supreme Court, have done the most to define them. (TIP: Have the kids underline or highlight important words and ideas.)

Next, students read about freedom of speech, of the press, and of religion. Each of these freedoms is arranged into its own section containing a word search puzzle followed by a series of statements. Class members must fill in missing words, names, and terms in the statements using words found in the puzzle.
