OBJECTIVE:
To become familiar with ways of earning a living in the Thirteen Colonies.

TIME:
1 and 1/2 class periods

After reading through a few introductory paragraphs with the teacher, students answer questions using a map illustrating the locations of goods and services that were offered throughout the Thirteen Colonies. Class members then complete a matching exercise by linking as many skilled workers (i.e. joiner, sailor, shipwright) with the kind of work they performed.

The highlight of this lesson is a unique and fun antique auction presented as a class game. Two teams will compete while trying to guess today's estimated dollar values of antiques (pictured on the game sheet) originally made during the 1600s and 1700s, and now prized by museums and collectors.

Easy-to-follow Teacher Instructions and answer key included, along with a 20-question follow up quiz to measure student progress. The quiz can also be given as a homework assignment.
