OBJECTIVE:
To understand the influence of Puritanism on the development of colonial New England.

TIME:
1 class period

Students compete in a fun contest to unscramble key words throughout several sentences about the Puritans, who founded the Massachusetts Bay Colony during the early 1600s. The first fifteen class members to finish and bring their contest sheets to the teacher will receive a written number (1-15) atop their paper. Contest sheets can then be exchanged and scored. Winners of the contest are those who have no wrong answers, and they will be ranked by order of finish. Complete contest rules are provided on the lesson pages.

Five Thought Questions are assigned for any remaining class time and/or homework. These questions pertaining to the Puritans require short written answers of 40-60 words and help develop critical thinking skills. Students responses can be discussed at the end of the period or beginning of the next.

Easy-to-follow Teacher Instructions and answer key included, along with a 20-question follow up quiz to measure student progress. The quiz can also be given as a homework assignment.
