OBJECTIVE:
To become familiar with some of the problems and dangers faced by settlers crossing the Atlantic Ocean during the 1600s.

TIME:
1 and 1/2 class periods

The lesson begins by reading with the class a story about what it was like for people in Europe to cross the Atlantic Ocean and settle in America during the 1600s. Afterwards, students complete a writing assignment in which they pretend they were on one of the ships that crossed the Atlantic at that time. Each class member will describe what it was like to cross the ocean on a crowded ship with their family and 100 other settlers from England.

Stories should be 150 words or more and include some of the things mentioned in the background information. Other guidelines are given to help students write their stories, such as their reason for leaving England, and what their family did during its first year in America.

Teacher Instructions included.
