Begin this lesson by reading the introductory paragraphs with the class about how there are many different forms of government, most of which fall into three categories: (1) autocracy – rule by one person (2) oligarchy – rule by a few people, and (3) democracy – rule by many people

Students will then read through descriptions of different forms of government and decide which words in parentheses best complete the sentences. This information is arranged into the following sections:

AUTOCRACY

  • monarchy
  • dictatorship
  • totalitarianism

OLIGARCHY
  • aristocracy
  • theocracy
  • junta
  • Communism

DEMOCRACY
  • direct democracy
  • representative democracy

ACTIVITY OPTIONS:
This lesson can be turned into a fun contest between individual class members or pairs (some students may prefer to work alone, others with a partner) to see who can come up with the most correct answers by the end of the period. You can also turn this into a game by dividing the class into two teams that will take turns trying to identify the correct answers as you read through the descriptions with them.

Easy-to-follow Teacher Instructions and answer key included, along with a 20-question follow up quiz to measure student progress. The quiz can also be given as a homework assignment.
