OBJECTIVE:
To understand reasons for and patterns of settlement during the Colonial Period.

TIME:
1 and 1/2 class periods

This lesson contains a wide variety of fun things for students to do. They will begin by reading background information about the colonists, including four main reasons why they came to America.

Class members then use critical thinking skills, design a merchant's advertisement persuading people to go to America and settle on its land, use a timeline, construct a bar graph, make a circle graph, use a table that organizes facts to answer questions, and do a map exercise on early settlements of the Thirteen Colonies.

After this lesson has been completed, you may want to put some of the students' merchant advertisements on display.

Easy-to-follow Teacher Instructions and answer key included, along with a 20-question follow up quiz to measure student progress. The quiz can also be given as a homework assignment.
